Mandelbrot, Benoit B.
(n. 20 nov. 1924, Varsovia, Polonia).

Matemático estadounidense nacido en Polonia. Obtuvo un doctorado en la Universidad de París y emigró a EE.UU. en 1958. Es reconocido por su trabajo con fractales (un término que él acuñó; ver geometría fractal), los cuales, demostró, pueden ocurrir en muchos lugares diferentes tanto en la matemática como en la naturaleza. Fue influenciado por Gaston Maurice Julia (n. 1893–m. 1978), cuyo trabajo sobre la teoría de sistemas dinámicos estuvo olvidado hasta la década de 1970, cuando los experimentos computacionales fundamentales de Mandelbrot y el uso de gráficos por computadora le dieron nueva vida. El conjunto Mandelbrot es un conjunto matemático de números imaginarios generados a partir de una ecuación sencilla. Parece infinitamente complejo cuando se grafica en una computadora.
